Property Brothers Recap Season 12 Episode 9 - Uplift and Electrify

Last night on Property Brothers season 12, Drew and Jonathan helped David and Aleni find their suburban dream home. David has a couple vintage cars and motorcycles so he really needs something with a big garage. Maleni hosts dinner every weekend with family and really needs a big kitchen and enough space to entertain them all. They would really like to have a big backyard for their daughters to be able to play in. Their budget is $1,075,000 and that’s going to be tough to do in the area they want.

They get a lot of ideas of what they want in their dream home so Drew can find them something in the right area and Jonathan can work his magic. The first house they go to take a look at is a five bedroom, four bathrooms and over 3000 square feet. There is a two car garage and David is worried that it might be too small. The floorplan would need to be opened up and updated, especially the kitchen. Aleni and David are worried about the amount of updating that is needed, but Jonathan eases those worries. The garage has tons of stuff in it so it looks really small because of all the stuff in it, but there is some added space that could be opened up. The house is listed at $725,000, but Drew thinks they should go in strong with an $825,000 offer which would still give them plenty of money for this project.

After looking at a few more house they land at a 2000 square foot house with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and Aleni hates it. It is too closed in for her, but Jonathan tells her that he can fix that. The kitchen is really awkward, but with some updating and reconfiguration, they can make it happen. This house does have a three car garage is David is really happy about and he is being a little more open about the ideas Jonathan is giving them. The backyard is huge which is a big selling point for them also. The list price is $960,000, but Drew thinks that he can get them down to about $925,000 which will give them enough for the renovation by putting them at the top of their budget.

They decide to go with the second house, so even though it’s listed pretty high, Drew thinks it’s overpriced and goes in at $925,000. Drew goes to see them and let them know that they got the house! Here is what the house looked like before.

During the demo of the kitchen, they found out why the cabinets are in such an awkward layout, there is a bump out in the wall that is covering the main waste pipe. They are going to have to have a plumber come out to move that pipe so that they can put the appliances where they want. Aleni comes by to talk to Jonathan to ask him if they can do something in the garage for David. It isn’t insulated or heated at the moment, but David is going to be spending a lot of time in there. Jonathan is worried about the cost because they are at their budget right now with the inside of the house. Aleni tells Jonathan that she has been able to put some money aside while living with her parents that David doesn’t know about. The crew gets started on the garage.

They run into some issues with the layout and the pipes and stuff needed to give them the layout they want. Aleni is okay with spending the extra $3400, but David isn’t too keen on it. They could probably find other places to cut costs though. They have run into another issue, the fireplace isn’t going to be able to be gas because the ventilation where it was and the chimney was not structurally sound. Jonathan has reframed it for electric, but David doesn’t like electric fireplaces. In order to make it a gas fireplace, it would cost them another $20,000 to fix the ventilation for it. They decide to look at a few electric fireplaces to see if they can find one they like. They pick on so that David could see it installed.

Aleni and her sister go to the house to check on the garage. Aleni thinks that having a lift in the garage will put the garage space over the top and ake David forget about the electric fireplace. They don’t have the money for that though. Aleni’s sister tells Jonathan that their parents have decided to buy the lift for David because he is such a hard worker and a great dad. Jonathan has the lift installed as quickly as possible. They manage to get the garage put together for David before the big reveal and when he sees it, he is blown away! This is what the house looked like after Jonathan worked his magic!
