House Hunters Recap: First Family Home In San Francisco

House Hunters Kitty and Nick have two young children and are looking for their first family home in San Francisco. The rental market in San Francisco is so high that they have decided they should just buy.

Of course that means they’re going to have to spend a lot of money to buy a house as well. Their budget is $1 million and that’s good because houses in San Francisco usually sell for $200,000 over the asking price.

Let’s take a look at what the couple is looking for in their first home.

Wish Lists

His: He prefers a contemporary-style home with high ceilings. He’s ok with some renovation projects as long as there’s a decent view, an office space and hardwood floors.

Hers: She would rather live in a Victorian home with some character. She loves white walls, a white kitchen and a place that is turnkey. She is not interested in renovations. She would also like 3 bedrooms and a lot of natural light.

House #1, $849,900

The first house is a more modern style home with 3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths. It’s bright with hardwood floors and taller ceilings. So far, it’s checking a lot of Nick’s boxes. It is a bit small, though. The kitchen is really nice and white, which is just what Kitty wants. The dining area is small, though. As is the bathroom. The bedrooms are bright and have decent views. This has has little bit of what both of them want. It’s definitely a contender, I’d say.

House #2 $899,000

This house is the Victorian that Kitty loves. It only has two bedrooms, though, and one of them is all the way on the bottom floor through the garage. The living room and dining are are very open and nice, though, with light wood floors and white walls. There’s also a nice view. The kitchen isn’t white, however, so she’s not loving that. Neither of them are impressed with the main bathroom. They would have to redo it. The house has a lot of concave ceilings and that makes the space look small. And again, that second bedroom is down stairs and through the garage. There’s no way they’re taking this house.

House #3 $799,000

The final house is a contemporary 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom. Inside it’s bright right, but a bit boxy. The kitchen is large, but the cabinets and counterpoints are too dark for Kitty and she doesn’t want to do any work. There’s an office space but it’s oddly a part of the kitchen. The backyard space is very nice. The house doesn’t have any good views. There’s a nice bonus space downstairs that could even become a rental space for extra income. I could see them taking this house. They seemed to like a lot of things about it.

I think the third house had the most things on their list. And the price was less. I think they might go with house 3. But maybe House 1. I’d, frankly, buy none of those houses. Especially for those prices. Remind me to never move to San Francisco. So let’s find out what they went with.

So which house did they go with? House #1. That choice makes sense. The house was listed at $849,900 and they paid $1.1M for it. Insane.
