Fixer Upper Recap: Season 5 Episode 3 – New Chapter for Family of Four

Fixer Upper Recap Season 5 Episode 3 - New Chapter for Family of Four

On this episode of Fixer Upper season 5, Chip and Joanna help Gayle and Tim find a new home for their family of four. They are looking for a four bedroom, three bath and they have a max budget of $400,000. Gayle wants to find a fixer upper, but Tim is more into the idea of buying a new construction.

The first house they look at is a three bedroom, one bath, 3100 square feet and it’s listed at $239,000. Even though there aren’t enough bedrooms or bathrooms in the house, Chip tells them that adding bathrooms won’t be an issue. The house has been really well kept up and with some minor updates and additions, it has potential. The kitchen in the house is pretty big and with some rearranging of the cabinets, it will look amazing.

The second house they look at is a four bedroom, three bath and 3400 square feet and it’s listed at only $212,000 compared to the $270,000 it has been listed at previously. It is also a house that they have shown to other clients. It is a little dated, but we all know that can be change. They get inside and they see that it needs to be opened up and the kitchen needs to be reworked. This one has the number of bedrooms and bathrooms that they want and they seem to really like this one.

The third house they look at is a three bedroom, three bath, 2300 square feet and they are only asking $150,000, which gives them a huge renovation budget. Chip tells them that he sees them coming in under budget if this is the house for them. Inside, it needs to be opened up and the kitchen needs a little work. Tim really likes the ideas for this house, but he doesn’t like the location, so they decide that this one is out of the running. In the end they decide to go with the second house and Chip couldn’t be more excited for them. This is what the house looked like before!

Some of the ideas for this house are to open up the living room a little by adding some big wide archways to go into the dining room, Joanna also had the idea of adding another fireplace in here to match the one in the dining room. In the dining room, they are just going to update the fireplace, replace the lighting and do new flooring. The kitchen needs to be completely gutted and the cabinets will be moved to the back wall. Joanna is going to have an island put in to allow for some extra storage and counter space.

There is an upstairs game room area that was added on by the previous owner and the plan for this room is to be a media and game area, but they are also going to put in a Murphy bed so that when they have guests, they have a place to stay. I like the Murphy bed idea the most because they can hide it away when they don’t need it. Joanna has Clint designing a game table for the upstairs. On the outside of the house they added a porch and they are also adding an office area off the living room for Tim. Joanna picked out a great set of French doors for the office. I’m also a huge fan of the shiplap wall in the office which is stained this gorgeous color.

Gayle and Tim wanted a beach house vibe to their new house and Gayle mentioned wanting Bahama shutters to the outside. Some last minute touches and all the furniture and decor and this out looks like a completely different house! The game table that Clint made is also in and it looks amazing! You can see it in the pictures below. I love how it looks like a coffee table, but it has built in drawers with all the games inside!

The project went very well and without any big issues and it came in under budget by about $14,000! The look on Tim and Gayle’s face when the house was revealed says it all! This is what the house looked like after the renovations and decor were finished!
