House Hunters Recap: Historic vs Modern in Detroit

House Hunters Brooke and Josh want to move out of Brooke’s mother’s home and into their first starter place. This young couple met in college and  have been together for six years. Brooke and Josh are now engaged; they have a three year old son named Kofi. Josh and Brooke want to use this home to start building their future in Detroit, Michigan.

Brooke is originally from Detroit, but Josh moved there three years ago. He’s from Newcastle, Pennsylvania. The couple has a budget of $250,000.

Wish Lists

They want a place close to downtown, so it’s easier for Josh to commute to work. He works from home, but needs to stop by the office from time to time. Josh and Brooke want a big backyard for Kofi. They need a big walk-in closet. The master bathroom needs a double vanity.

Hers: Brooke wants at least four bedrooms, because she wants to have at least two more children. She prefers historical homes, especially with colonial and craftsman styles. Brooke likes homes with defined spaces and white kitchens.

His: Josh wants an open concept modern home. He also wants a two-car garage. Office space and a big shower round-off his wish list items.

House #1, $150,000

This colonial style home was built in 1932. It has three bedrooms, and one and a half bathroom. All the spaces in this home have a defined area. It has historical charm with a wood burning fireplace, an arc-way, stair details, and crown molding. The kitchen is very unattractive and would need complete renovations.

The bathroom would also need renovations because of the grandma vintage wallpaper. This home has a fenced backyard, garage, and unfinished basement but it lacks much closet space. It’s only ten minutes from downtown Detroit.

House #2, $189,900

This modern home was built in 2004. It has three bedrooms, and two and half bathrooms. It’s an open concept home with tall ceilings, hardwood floors, and a dark kitchen. The kitchen includes a pantry. This home also has a gas fireplace, a garage, and a full basement. Both the garage and basement need work.

The backyard isn’t fenced, but this place has a large walk-in closet. It also has a big master bathroom with a big shower and dual vanity. It’s about 50 minutes from downtown.

House #3, $179,900

This vintage craftsman blends modern and historical with some original features and modern updates. It was built in 1914. It has four bedrooms, and two and a half bathrooms. It has a foyer, wood burning fireplace for the vintage features. The modern features include an open concept, updated white kitchen, and a luxury large master bathroom.

The backyard is fenced but it has no garage. The basement has low walls, the master bedroom is small, and there is no walk-in closet. It’s very close to downtown.

Decision Time: House #1 needed a lot of renovations but it was close to downtown and way under budget. House #2 was very far from downtown but it had many of their wish list items, including a dual vanity and a pantry. House #3 lacked closet space but it was close to downtown, and it blended both of their style preferences.

Josh and Brooke picked…House #3.

They paid $180,000 instead of the original $179,900. The moment they moved in, they had an issue with the bathroom pipes. They froze. Brooke also let Josh temporarily use the extra large room for his office space. However, she wants to transform it into a double bedroom once they have more children.
