House Hunters Recap: Family Searches for a Home in Rural Vermont

House Hunters Recap: Family Searches for a Home in Rural Vermont

Married couple Justin and Caitlin found out that historical homes come in abundance in Montpelier, VT. But this doesn’t make it easy for them to find their perfect home on House Hunters. Justin and Caitlin have been married for about ten years, but have known each other for nearly 20–they met in college.

The pair recently had two children, a son named Gael and a daughter named Penelope. Justin and Caitlin have returned to their hometown in Vermont, and since moving back, they have shared a place with Caitlin’s parents.

Wish Lists

Hers: Caitlin wants a historical home that had an updated kitchen, natural lighting, and a luxurious bathroom. She also needs at least three rooms, and they have to all be on one floor. The kitchen should be on the bottom floor and bedrooms at the top.

His: Justin wants more of a contemporary home with lots of land. He would love some farm-type land near the woods. He also wants wall-to-wall carpet.

They have a budget of $450,000–which includes renovations.

House #1, $349,000

It’s about 25 minutes from Montpelier. It was built in 1880, so it definitely has a Little House on the Prairie vibe. It has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The ceilings on this place are low, which makes it look more like a cabin.

The kitchen is not updated but more quaint and cozy. The bedrooms are small, but big enough for Caitlin, Justin, and their children. If you like historical homes, this place is a dream. However, it woud be hard to renovate and keep the integrity of the space.

House #2, $499,000

This one is very close to downtown, but it’s right by the highways. This could become a problem with the noise and traffic. It’s a huge space of land, and pretty historical since it was built in 1935. The home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and hardwood floors.

The kitchen in this place is even smaller than the first one. The bedrooms are small as well, but it has plenty of lounge area. The kitchen was recently renovated, like much of the house, so this covers Caitlin’s wish list item. Justin and Caitlin wouldn’t have to do anything to repair this home.

House #3, $365,000

Justin despises the exterior of this place, and Caitlin hates its interior. It has four bedrooms and two bathrooms. The windows add a lot of extra lighting, and this house has a lot of open space, and just random extra places, like a sunroof, game room, and crawl space. It’s also full of carpets, so Justin is in heaven.

This place is just a fascinating home because of all the things to explore and discover in it, but it needs a lot of updating.

Decision Time: Justin seemed to love the third home, but Caitlin was very ify about it. The right fit (to us) seemed like house #2, but Justin and Caitlin seem like a couple that stays very strict to their budget. So we expected them to pick house #1. Well..did they?

Nope. They picked…House #3!

Caitlin and Justin didn’t want to risk losing it, so they put in a bid of $370,000. They have already started to renovate it by adding new carpets. The children adapts Justin’s love of carpets.

  1. Not sure where this description is coming from–Caitlin did not hate the interior of the third house at all. I thought that was the right house for them.
