House Hunters Recap: Facing East in California

House Hunters Recap: Facing East in CaliforniaOn this House Hunters, we got to see what a million dollar budget gets you in Anahiem, CA. Married couple Rubin and Maliani wanted to find their first home now that Maliani is done with residency.  The couple have a young daughter, so they have to make sure to find a space big enough for her and them.

The couple both want big closets for their master bedroom, white kitchen cabinets, and a turnkey home. They also want four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Other than those items, their wish lists vary greatly.

Wish Lists

Hers: Maliani doesn’t want a pool, she’s worried about the safety element with a small child running around. She also wants a ranch style home, preferentially one that has a Spanish or Mediterranean flare. Maliani also wants a dramatic entranceway. She also has one quirky request: It must face the east. Her grandmother told her that it was good luck if your home faces the east, so she’s trying hard for that element.

His: Rubin wants a two-story contemporary style home. He also wants a pool,a nice view, and open floor plans.

They bring their friend and realtor, Ajay, along for the journey. You can immediately tell that he’s had a long, draining journey with Maliani and Rubin, which they mention at the beginning of the episode. They have been looking three years for the right home, but their varying list keeps them from settling on a place.

Rubin and Maliani’s budget is between one million and one million five hundred.

House #1, $1.33 million

House Hunters Recap: Facing East in California

Rubin is immediately worried about this place because it’s at the high end of their budget. Maliani is in love with the house because it has a dramatic entranceway with a Spanish flavor, and best of all, it faces the east. The house has high ceilings, which they both think is a plus.

They love the kitchen with the marble island, open space, and modern equipment. However, they don’t love the color of it. They plan to repaint it. They also don’t love the carpet. They want wood flooring. Maliani also doesn’t like that it has a huge pool, but they love the backyard.

House #2, $995,000

House Hunters Recap: Facing East in California

This house immediately starts with bad juju: It’s facing the west. Neither of the pair like the lower ceilings. They also don’t like how the backyard is pretty plain and pool-less–for Rubin. The closets are small and the bathroom needs serious work.

They do like that the kitchen is white and the natural lighting. However, it’s pretty obvious that they’re not going to pick this place

House #3, $1.315 million

House Hunters Recap: Facing East in California

This place is huge with five bedrooms and three bathrooms. It’s a contemporary home, so more of Rubin’s style. They like the high ceilings but the entrance is not dramatic enough for Maliani. The place gets a so-so start with facing southeast.

It’s an open kitchen but not as nice as the first one. The backyard is also small, so it would need some work to make more child friendly. The biggest draw of this hou is all the windows for natural lighting.

Decision Time: We know that Maliani and Rubin aren’t picking house #2, so it’s between house #3 and house #1. House #1 basically had almost everything Maliani wanted, with the exception of no pool.

House Hunters Recap: Facing East in California

You could tell that they fell in love with the first home the minute they stepped in, so it’s no surprise that they picked…House #1!

They ended up getting it for $1.30 million, and have begun renovations. They plan to completely remove the carpet, and rework the kitchen, and remove some of the mirrors. They won’t be able to move in there for another two months, but they’re happy with their new home.
