House Hunters Recap: Colonial vs. MidCentury Cape Cod in Marblehead, Massachusetts

On this House Hunters, we meet Andrew and Robin, a married couple hoping to find the right blend of historical charm and modern convenience. The couple met 16 years ago, and have been married for 11 years. Andrew joined the military after 9/11, so they spent a big portion of their life together living in different locations. They have had 9 homes.

For the last five years, Andrew, Robin, and their three children have been renting a place in Marblehead, MA. Their family has since extended to include a nanny, a dog, and a hamster. They want to find a forever home to give their children more stability.

They have a $600,000 budget.

Wish Lists

They both want to stay in the Marblehead area, and to find a place with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. They want a fixer-upper with a large yard and a large kitchen. Andrew and Robin also want their new home to have a French country style interior, and an open concept layout.

Hers: Robin wants something built in 1950s or later.  She also wouldn’t mind a cape cod style home.

His: Andrew wants the home to be very old. He wants a colonial style.

House #1, $519,000

This home was built in the 1800s. It’s an old school that was converted into a house. The exterior blends the farm, cape cod, and colonial looks. It has very high ceilings, and very white kitchen cabnets. The home has four bedrooms and a small backyard.

The bedrooms are a pretty good size, including the master bedroom. The master bathroom is huge with plenty of room for Andrew and Robin. The biggest issue is the slanted floors and a few cosmetic changes.

House #2, $575,000

This home was built in 1962. It has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. This home has been recently updated, so it has nice shiny hardwood floors, a centerpiece fireplace, and new kitchen appliances.

The kitchen has an open concept. The backyard, bedrooms, and master bedroom are all on the smaller size. The master bathroom is pretty large but very quirky–it’s painted pink and has two toilets.

House #3, $475,000

This home is a 1913 built cape cod. It has three bedrooms, and one and a half bathrooms. It also has a centerpiece fireplace. It also has a lot of little cool extra rooms and features, like a greenroom, a sunroom, and skylight.

The kitchen is very big but the master bedroom is on the smaller side. The same goes for the bathrooms. This place also has an enclosed porch, and the backyard has a pond.

Decision Time: Robin seemed to really hate House #1, which is why we should have been expecting the twist.

They pick…House #1.

Andrew and Robin got the $519,000 asking price lowered to $510,000. They’ve also already started renovations, like making the floors more even.
