Home Town Season 2 Recap Episode 4 - Southern Italianate Charm

In last night’s episode of Home Town season 2, Ben and Erin helped their longtime friends, Jordan and Ally find their forever home. They have a budget of $200,000. They are looking for a house that they can grow into.

The first house that Ben and Erin bring them to is the Thompson House. This house is a three bedroom, two bathroom home with about 2800 square feet and Ben says they can get this one for about $128,000, which would leave them with $72,000 for the renovations. The living room is all cosmetic, the room that needs the most work is the kitchen, but even with all the upgrades and renovation, they would still come in under budget.

The second house they go to look at is the Carmichael House. This house is a This house is huge! It’s a seven bedroom, three bathroom home with about 3600 square feet of living space. The house is listed at $158,000 so that only leaves about $42,000 for renovations. Most of the house only needs some paint, the kitchen needs to be toned down and the master bathroom is, well, it’s interesting. It’s going to cost about $20,000 in the bathroom and $15,000 in the kitchen. In the end, Jordan and Ally choose the Thompson house.

Here is what the house looked like before Ben and his team got their hands on it.

During the demolition, Ben and his crew find that there is wiring that has been run through the cabinets in the kitchen, which is definitely not safe. They will have to relocate the wiring back into the walls. The cabinets that are currently in the kitchen aren’t in the best shape, but with some refinishing they can be used in another project. The carefully pull those out to re-purpose them.

Part of this project is to relocate an entry way from the kitchen into what was the laundry room. They will then move the laundry room somewhere else to make the current one a mudroom. There was some really ugly carpet in the living room so they were really hoping that the same oak floors that are upstairs are also downstairs. Luckily they are, but from having the carpet padding over them for so many years, the floors have to be refinished. Luckily, they have a little room in the budget for it.

On the outside, they have their landscaping guy come in to trim the tree outside the house to reveal the porch and clean it up a little. They then move on to them installing the door for their mudroom and then they plan on putting an outdoor cabinet in place of the original doorway. The door and cabinet both come out amazing. Jordan rides motorcycles and the cabinet will be used for storage for his helmet and other outdoor items.

Later, Ben and Erin get some bad news from their project manager, there used to be termites in the house and there is a lot of old damage that has to be repaired. This takes a $1500-$2000 hit on the budget. Meanwhile, Ben is heading to the workshop to make Ally and Jordan a coffee table. Erin is going to be putting mullions in the second floor windows to make it look more historic. It currently has plate glass windows.

After that the cabinets and counter tops come in and get installed. The coffee table that Ben is making is an upholstered coffee table, Erin keeps calling it an ottoman. Erin goes to get the fabric for it and then decides that Ben should make lamps out of the same wood to help tie it into the room a little better.

It is time for the tile to go in for the kitchen back splash. Ben finished up the table and lamps and delivered them to Erin who is doing the decor on the house. Ally and Jordan are moving in the following day and there is a bit of stuff that needs to be touched up. Here is what the house looked like after Ben and Erin finished it up!

They bought the house for $128,000 and only put $65,000 and still came in under the $200,000 budget. The house came out amazing and Ally and Jordan couldn’t be happier with it. What do you think of this transformation? Let me know in the comments below, on Facebook or on Twitter!
