Home Town Season 2 Recap: Episode 2 – An Island for All

Home Town Season 2 Recap Episode 2 - An Island for All

Last night on Home Town season 2, Erin and Ben Napier helped Morissa and Marian find the perfect house. Miss Marian had been a teacher in their town of Laurel, Mississippi for 30 years. Her and her daughter, Morissa, are looking for a house under $200,000 and she really wants a big kitchen with a big island for her family to gather around.

The first house is the Jones house which used to belong to a local radio host. It is three bedroom, three bathroom, 3000 square feet and Ben says they can get the house for $132,000. Erin mentions that it is a low maintenance house and the living areas in the house are really big. The outside of the house needs some updating and landscaping, but Ben thinks that they would cost about $7000. The den in the front needs some new flooring and they want to open it up into the dining room. The living room is full of wood paneling, but Erin has a great plan for this room to make it brighter. The kitchen is kind of small, but Erin tells Marian that they would remove the wall separating it from the rest of the house. Marian seems to really like the ideas and it all comes in under her budget.

The second house they bring her to see is a The Slade house, its a three bedroom, two bathroom, it’s 2600 square feet and it’s listed at $129,900. The outside would get a painted brick and the update to the columns and windows in the front. The living room in the front is huge and runs almost the entire length of the house. The kitchen needs a lot of work, it has a fire place in it that needs to be refaced and everything else needs to be updated, but there is a huge pantry attached to it. It can also be a work area of of some sort and Erin mentions maybe a sewing room. There is also a sunken den off the pantry with a lot of space. It’s also only going to cost $58,000 to renovate with leaves a lot of extra money.

Marian and Morissa choose the Jones house as the home they want to live in and this is what it looked like before Erin and Ben got their hands on it!

The plans for this house are pretty awesome. Starting with the living room, they are going to take all the wood paneling down and take some of the big bulky beams down from the ceiling. Ben has plans for the wood from the beams. He is going to build Miss Marian a dining room table out of it that will be 12 feet long. There is a really nice patio outside the living room doors and a nice sized backyard for her grandkids when they come to visit. The picture that I have marked Den and Dining room is going to be just that. It’s going to be the dining room and then the room in the back is going to be a seating area.

They plan on taking out a lot of the walls in this area to open the space up. In the kitchen, they are going to open this up by removing one of the walls, they are also going to give Miss Marian a huge 11 foot long island where the family can gather around. There is a little nook in the kitchen that will be a breakfast nook for when it’s just her at home, before the family comes to visit. There is a really nice cabinet in the current kitchen that has a pull out cutting board in it and it’s about 9 feet long, they are planning on making this into the island.

There was an old iron security door on the front of the house that Miss Marian hated so that was replaced with a nice set of French doors. The built in in the living room was taken out and rebuilt into a much lighter and less bulky looking built in. The fire place in the living room was resurfaced. Meanwhile, the island in the kitchen is coming along really nicely and I can’t wait to see it with the counter top put on it! Erin is out shopping for some zebra print stuff to decorate with, Miss Marian loves animal prints, especially zebra and Erin found the perfect area rug.

When the counter for the island comes in, it takes a ton of men to lift this thing. Ben tells us that the counter top alone weighs 693 pounds! Could you imagine? Jonathan, the project manager, asks Ben if he thinks it will hold. They lift it and put it on the island hoping that it will hold and it does! It is gorgeous too. Here is what Miss Marian’s house looked like after Erin, Ben and their team finished her renovations!

  1. This was an interesting episode and included many decisions many renovators come across. I’d really like it if the HGTV shows would include paint colors and other products used on the website. For example, I’d love to know the paint colors for the island and kitchen cupboards in this episode.
